Code Pink - Infant Child Abduction
Click Here for Printable .DOC Version

POLICY:
Chatham Hospital shall have a system in place that quickly mobilizes the staff in the event of an infant or child abduction.

PROCEDURE:
1) Hospital personnel who ascertain that an infant or child is missing shall:

Page “Code Pink”.  Using any facility phone, dial 30, wait for tone, then dial 00 and announce “Code Pink” and location three times.
Call police (911) to report incident and location.

2) Administrator

During business hours the Administrator will report to Small Conference Room (“Command Center”) to coordinate information related to search of the hospital and further action. Off business hours the Clinical Supervisor will coordinate information with local authorities after their arrival.
Administrator/Clinical Supervisor (or designee) shall assign one person to be with the family members of the missing infant or child.

3)Hospital Personnel
Upon hearing the “Code Pink” page, all personnel shall:

Immediately report to posted assignments at all exits to be on the lookout for any suspicious behavior or activity (see Posted Assignments table). Hospital personnel at exits will remain at their posted stations until “All Clear” is paged. NO ONE SHOULD LEAVE THE FACILITY. VISITORS, VENDORS, ETC. WILL BE ASKED TO REMAIN IN THE FACILITY UNTIL LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES ARRIVE AND PROCESS THEM. Hospital staff should not make physical contact with suspected abductor(s) in an attempt to prevent them from leaving the facility—rather, they should observe and immediately report pertinent descriptive information to Command Center who can, in turn, communicate to authorities. Verbally addressing the abductor in a non-threatening manner is acceptable as long as in doing so, the employee does not put him/herself in danger.

Hospital personnel not posted at exits will conduct a room-to-room search, and label doors of rooms upon “clearing” the room (use ‘sticky', tape, etc). Report pertinent information to Command Center and report completion of search of area to Command Center.

‘Code Pink all clear' is announced when directed by Law Enforcement Authorities.

OTHER POINTS TO REMEMBER:
In this type of situation, time is of the essence!  It is important that Code Pink is announced over facility PA system and 911 is called as soon as it has been determined that a child has been abducted.
Be observant! The more descriptive information that can be provided to law enforcement authorities the better; try to observe details such as: physical description of abductor and child; type and color clothing (including child's shoes); type of vehicle abductor uses—license tag if possible.
Employees who carry cell phones with camera capability may be able to photograph abductor and/or his/her vehicle (if doing so does not put the employee at risk).
Never risk your own personal safety by physically intervening! This can jeopardize your safety as well as that of the child.
